A professional oil massage from time to time ensures a all-round healthy development of your baby. In the absence of professional service, you can do it by
yourself at home – at least at the basic level. In fact, the magic of your hand will work far better, if you know the right techniques. Here are a few tips on how to do the basic massage-at-home.
First, give the massage when the baby is relaxed and active. Massage after 30 minutes of feeding. Create a sedate dimly lit, warm atmosphere in the room where you give the massage.
Avoid almond oil and other oils extracted from nuts. The best is grape-seed oil.
Lay a mat and spread a soft towel over it. Place the baby on this, Take off the baby’s clothes and the napkin. As you prepare to give the massage, keep the baby engaged with your talk
Take off your bracelets and rings. Pour oil into your hand and then rub your hands so that the oil in your hands becomes warm.
Place your hands gently on the baby’s shoulders and rub toward the feet. Apply light pressure. Massage so that your palms and fingers are in full contact with the baby’s body. As the baby feels this touch well, the massage becomes more effective. Rub like this about 5-6 times.
After this, place your hand on the baby’s chest and rub in upward and outward directions. Massage over the collar bone, shoulders and arms for about 5-6 times. Again massage from shoulders to feet 5-6 times. Give a belly massage using your finger and give a massage in clock-wise direction on the tummy. Then gently massage the sides of the belly – moving your hands from the sides towards the belly button.
Then, as you start massaging the baby’s legs, have oil in your hands, and rub ever so gently from the thighs down the legs towards the feet. Do this slowly and gently for the baby to enjoy the massage. Work on one leg at a time. Repeat it many times over. Rub the baby’s body again from shoulders to feet.
If the baby is comfortable, then turn the baby around face down and massage his back and the back of the legs alternating the strokes.
End the session by placing your hands on the base of the baby’s back or the shoulders for a few seconds and gently withdraw your hands. Remove the excess oil from the baby’s body by wrapping an absorbent towel around the baby, the excess oil can be absorbed.
Spend some 10-15 minutes to give the massage, which will do a lot of good to the baby. If the baby cries during the massage, stop right away. Your child is feeling uncomfortable or out of mood. Continuing the massage can only hurt your child.
