Baby Pacifier: The Good and The Bad

Usually when the baby cries the first thing that a mother tries to do is to stick a pacifier in the baby’s mouth to calm him down. But, the question is how correct it is to do so? Is a pacifier always good? In fact, is a pacifier necessary at all?

Like everything else, pacifiers are both good and bad. Kids Curacao, a Day Care Center, with a mission focused on kids, has looked into the issue. Here are some plusses and minuses of a pacifier.

As a mother, the primary thing that you need to understand is, if you are breastfeeding the baby, to avoid a pacifier at all times, at least until the child become 4-5 weeks old. Breastfeeding is not just feeding the baby. It has many positive aspects to it. It is the best nourishment your baby can get. Babies regularly breast-fed are immune to many ailments.

The baby’s muscular system responds uniquely to breastfeeding. The way the baby sucks the nipple. The muscles in the baby’s system move when being breast-fed and when sucking a pacifier differently.

If he gets used to sucking pacifier then he will find it difficult with breastfeeding. So do not take recourse to giving your baby a pacifier unless you know from your pediatrician on the best time to introduce the use of pacifier.

One very good aspect of using a baby pacifier is that it lowers the chances of a syndrome known as sudden infant death syndrome. In some babies, the addiction to pacifiers is not as much as in some other babies. Babies with stronger addiction find it extremely uncomfortable without a pacifier.

Here are some of the demerits of using a pacifier regularly:

One of the demerits is that they can disfigure the dental structure of the baby by distorting the gum lining.

The second disadvantage is a baby that is used to sleep sucking a pacifier will lose its sleep the moment the pacifier is removed. It becomes difficult for the baby to sleep again until the pacifier is given back.

Another problem is that the use of pacifiers is known to cause ear infections.

It is suggestible that you totally avoid using pacifiers if you can. This means you need to think at the time of giving a pacifier to your baby in the first instance.

When your baby cries, try to find out the actual reason. May be he is hungry; may be he needs his diaper to be changed. Or he has a stomach disorder, an ear-ache. May be he is feeling too cold or very warm. There are many reasons why your baby cries; and there are many ways of comforting your baby. Using a pacifier need not be one of them.

Sometimes, the baby just wants the warmth of its mother. Just take him in your arms and hold him close to your bosom. He feels comforted. Do not try to have a pacifier do what you alone can do.
