Kids with Good Habits

Bringing up children is a satisfying as well as challenging responsibility. All parents know how important it is for their children to develop good habits. These habits help them grow up in to responsive, respectable and responsible mature adults. This can be achieved when children are given the right measure of love, care and direction during the days of their development.

It is a misplaced notion that children can be taught good habits in a strict regime. This is an illusory notion that can be even counter-productive. When overpowered or dominated, children become timid or rebellious. Parents will have to balance between being strict and being lenient. If you can convince them of the power of good habits, they will not need too much of prodding.

Good habits are the basic values practiced by a cultured person. They, therefore, manifest as one’s conduct. Discussed here are a few of such values.

Being Respectful: This is a primary value that should show up as one’s habit. Kids being keen and efficient observers, they learn by watching what happens around them, especially what they see in their parents. Therefore, it is necessary that you talk to people and about people respectfully. You need to be considerate of others in your language. Your children will emulate you.

Being Polite: Often we sound rude, arrogant and contemptuous of others in our transactions. We do this even when we deal with our children. Unless we cultivate politeness as a habit, we tend to lose the value. When you practice politeness, your children will recognize and experience the sweetness and pick it up as a habit.

Being Confident: Confidence can make or mar a personality. It is the highway to growth, development and success. So, talk to your children about the need for them to be confident. Watch against their becoming over-confident. Confidence is a balanced mix of self-belief, human limitations and circumstances. Practice being confident and your kids will also develop the habit.

Being Healthy:  Good health leads to good things. Good eating habits ensure good health and as the popular philosophical adage goes, a healthy body holds a healthy mind. This needs to be included in the process of your children’s upbringing.

Being Patient and Caring:  Patience helps us keep off stress and pressures. You can be patient when you are considerate of others; when you are able to see things from others’ perspective; when you can be empathetic. Patience can strengthen in you the qualities of compassion, consideration and conciliation.

Being Courteous: This is another essential quality that should develop as a habit. You develop the habit of saying please, thank you, and such courtesy expressions and your children will repeat after you.

Being Hygienic: Your not being hygienic is a discomfort to others. You have to be considerate of others and do what is necessary. So, you have to practice hygiene. Tell your kids about the importance of hygiene. They will practice it as a good habit.

There are several good habits that we all can practice and shape a personality of value for ourselves. It is important to initiate this process in early childhood.
